Founding and idea for the company

The initial ideas for Korko originated as early as 2020. Originally specialising in wooden toys, Hape had been researching the use of further sustainable materials for several years. Thorough research, months-long processes and several quality checks later, they were convinced: Korko was founded in 2021 as a joint venture between the two companies which, on the face of it, couldn’t be more different. Hape as a renowned toy manufacturer and Amorim, the world’s largest producer of cork. But what connects the two companies? A love for nature and the idea of making sustainability accessible to everyone.
A year of prototypes, ideas and products later, and it was time for the long-awaited launch: Toys that boast exceptional climate credentials in terms of sustainability, quality, design and value of play. The first Korko product is ready to light up children’s eyes with hours of playtime fun.

Design & collection

But it was a long road to reach this point – paying close attention to detail and driven by the idea of creating innovative toys, our designer, herself a mother to two children, brought Korko to life with her wide-reaching creativity and expertise. Inspired by the classic Fröbel design, the first Korko product is a set of building blocks.
Classic yet innovative – the building blocks of the future.

Mission

Alongside its environmentally-friendly, carbon-neutral products, Korko features a loyal companion which allows children to delve into a more sustainable world. The cute owl Coco playfully guides little ones through harvesting the bark as well as the production process of the Korko building blocks, and shows them a variety of different materials. Our Coco teaches little ones about the harmony between people, animals and nature, and, in this way, guides them in leading a climate-conscious lifestyle.

Cork
From nature to the heart of the playroom

Our toys are produced using cork from a Portuguese oak forest. Up to 4.6 million tonnes of CO2 are captured in this forest under the Portuguese sun every year. Unlike with wooden toys, the trees are not chopped down. In order to obtain our cork, only the tree bark is removed and it can be harvested again after approx. 9 years as part of our careful hand-crafted process. This is because cork is a rapidly renewable raw material. Regular removal of the bark also helps to absorb further CO2 from the atmosphere. This is how we are able to ensure our toys are climate-neutral and made in Europe – for the sake of the environment and all future generations to come!

The multi-talented material from Mother Nature

Cork from Korko is a multi-talented material that’s simply bursting with positive qualities.
Our sustainable toys are extremely safe as they’re so lightweight and the rounded edges ensure that little fingers and tiny toes won't get hurt. And even the highest tower of blocks won't disturb the peace or create a din when it topples over.
Korko promotes creativity, lets children’s imaginations run wild and improves hand-eye coordina-tion as well as fine motor skills. And Korko has even more to offer: the texture is not only more durable with better non-slip properties than with regular toys, but the surface also has an antibac-terial effect so that bacteria is unable to permanently accumulate on the toy. Wow! That must be everything, right? Actually, we still have one more plus point! Cork has an anti-static effect, which is why it attracts much less dust. So Korko is also perfectly suited to those with allergies.

How we create our toys for you

The first step is to granulate the bark, together with the leftovers from the production of the bottle corks. Next, the granules are pressed into the correct shape using a unique process and are then given a finishing treatment so the product can easily be dyed and is particularly low maintenance. Using bright water-based dyes, the final step is to transform the Korko toys into colourful eye-catchers that will brighten up any playroom.
